With every new release, there’s always some excitement in the air. And there was no exception with WordPress 5.0 because of its revolutionary addition: Gutenberg!
Gutenberg, the new WordPress editor, also known as the WordPress block editor, is now an integral part of the popular CMS!
Before we dive into this block editor, let’s take a quick look at how to use it and some of its features. We will also compare the Gutenberg editor to the Classic editor for those who are not yet ready to switch.
So, let’s get started!

WordPress Gutenberg is a completely updated and reimagined editor. It has replaced the WordPress Classic Editor, TinyMCE, and has become an integral part of the WordPress core.
This is an exceptional treat for WordPress users who see the editor as a simple fix for problems. Users who directly deal with content production (copywriters, bloggers, editors) have only positive things to say about the Gutenberg editor.
Gutenberg WordPress Editor elevates the process of creating posts and pages to the next level — enriching the experience of creating content. It is based on a block architecture that helps users to create any type of content conveniently.
Gutenberg provides dynamic blocks to eliminate shortcodes and manual HTML blocks and to greatly simplify the process of editing and publishing content, thus making content creation and page management more user-friendly.
The tool is more than just a tool to write blog posts; it’s a powerful visual editor.
It is still in development, and new features are being added regularly. Ultimately, the goal is to make WordPress more accessible for everyone.
The WordPress Dashboard includes two editors: the Gutenberg editor and the classic editor. The Gutenberg editor is a new, block-based editor introduced in 2018. The classic editor is the legacy editor that has been used since WordPress was first released in 2003. Developers can choose which editor they want to use when creating a website or blog. Both editors have their strengths and weaknesses.
The former classic editor was a text editor with formatting buttons similar to Microsoft Word. It relies on shortcodes and HTML tags to create content. While this is not necessarily a bad aspect, it can be daunting for users who are not familiar with code.
On the other hand, the new block editor uses a different approach, called ‘blocks.’ Blocks are the elements you add to the edit screen to create content layouts. Every item you add to your post or page is a block.
The Gutenberg is a page builder that allows you to create custom layouts for your pages and posts.
The Gutenberg editor is built into WordPress, the default editor for all new WordPress sites. The editor is block-based, meaning all content is divided into blocks. Each block can be customized, and you can add or remove blocks as needed. You can also rearrange blocks to create custom layouts.
To use the Gutenberg editor, simply click on the “Add Block” button and choose the type of block you want to add. You can then proceed with adding content to the block. You can also change the settings for each block, such as the alignment, width, and background color. Once you’re happy with your layout, click the “Publish” button to publish your page or post.
Gutenberg has a wide variety of features that make it a powerful tool for creating content. Some of the most notable features include:
This is one of the most noteworthy features of Gutenberg. It allows you to quickly add blocks by simply typing in a forward slash, followed by the name of the block you want to add.
For example, type in “/paragraph” and hit enter if you want to add a paragraph block. This would automatically add a paragraph block to your post.
This feature saves time as you don’t have to search for the blocks you want to add. Simply type in “/” and start typing the block’s name.
Gutenberg also allows you to save blocks as reusable blocks. This is extremely useful if you find yourself using the same blocks over and over again.
To save a block as a reusable block, simply click on the three dots in the top right corner of the block and select “Add to Reusable Blocks.”
You can then give your reusable block a name and hit publish. When you’ve done this, you can add the reusable block to any post or page by selecting it from the “Reusable” dropdown in the block editor.
Gutenberg makes it very easy to embed content from other sources.
You can then paste the URL of the content you wish to embed. Gutenberg will automatically fetch and embed the content for you.
This is a convenient way to quickly add YouTube videos, Twitter posts, or even complete articles from other sources.
Another advanced feature of the new editor is its ability to handle images. You can add an image block to your content and simply drag a photo in from your computer to start editing it.
You can choose from several image blocks. You can choose a Cover Image block and add text to your image, or go with a gallery or single image block. Whatever you decide, you can customize your image placement and arrangement to suit your design taste.
Gutenberg adds another useful tool to WordPress: a document outlining. This feature will only display information if you have used the Heading block.
You can access the document outline information by clicking the ‘i’ icon in the upper-left corner of your edit screen.
The debate over Gutenberg is complicated, and people have unique reasons for supporting or arguing against it. However, let’s summarize a few of the new editor’s potential pros and cons.
Gutenberg is a huge game changer for WordPress. It brings a whole new way of creating content with its block system. You are no longer limited to text and images; now, you can add audio, video, galleries, and much more with just a few clicks.
This gives you much more control over the look and feel of your site without having to delve into code or hire a developer. You can also now save your work as templates to use again in future posts or pages. This will speed up the creation process for WordPress users immensely.
As Gutenberg continues to be developed and adopted by more themes and plugins, we can only imagine the possibilities it opens up for WordPress users worldwide. Exciting times ahead!
If you’re not using the Gutenberg editor yet, or are you ready to take your blogging to the next level, give the Gutenberg editor a try! It’s a great way to speed up your content creation process and take advantage of all WordPress’s new features.
